Esthetics School Medspa Field Trip

Atlanta Institute of Aesthetics instructor, Ray Louis, recently took students on a field trip to Dermani Medspa. Allison Hillyer, co-founder along with her husband, Harvey Hillyer, is a naturopathic doctor, esthetician and Atlanta School of Massage graduate. They founded Dermani Medspa in 2013 and currently have locations in Buford, Johns Creek, Sandy Springs, Buckhead & Midtown Atlanta, Georgia. They gave a comprehensive presentation to the students on a number of skin and body care treatments. The presentation was followed by a Micro-needling demonstration performed on Ray.

From Traditional Spa to Medspa

Allison graduated from esthetics school in 2001 and immediately enrolled in The Atlanta School of Massage program. At that time she was not interested in the medical side of esthetics or working with a dermatologist. Her dream was to pursue a spa career with her dual certification. After applying to a number of spas and opportunities she was offered a position at a dermatologist’s office. There she received new training and to her surprise fell in love with the work. She then went on to become a naturopathic doctor. Harvey was a practicing physical therapist with an extensive business background. Four years ago, with their combined experience, skills and knowledge, they embarked on their joint venture and dream, Dermani Medspa.

Medspa Treatments

The dynamic presentation included information and benefits of numerous skincare treatments.

  • Botox/juvederm uses neurotoxin protein and hyaluronic acid filler.
  • Latisse Eyelash Enhancer
  • Kybella kills fat and corrects double chin with permanent results.
  • Body contouring/skin tightening
  • Chemical peels benefits fine lines, wrinkles, scars , acne and age spots.
  • Microdermabrasion uses aluminum oxide crystals to remove the top layer of skin.
  • Dermaplaning removes superficial layer of skin with no downtime and prepares skin for a number of treatments.

Words of Advice

“Get to know your client and ask lots of questions to determine best treatment for each individual.”

“Know your ingredients. Your clients will do lots of research so it is imperative that estheticians are current with treatment knowledge and ingredients.”

Visit PubMed a free full-text archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature at the U.S. National Institutes of Health’s National Library of Medicine (NIH/NLM) for the most reliable research articles.

If you are considering medical esthetics Allison recommends getting a laser license. Many establishments will not hire estheticians without this license.

Micro-needling Video Demonstration

Micro-needling is recommended for Anti-aging, fine lines and wrinkles, burn scars, hyperpigmentation and overall skin tone and texture. Micro-needling rejuvenates the skin with similar results to laser treatments but less expensive and no downtime. It provides great results for all sorts of situations including acne scars.
